It all started on a spring day in March 2004. My husband (Scott) was feeding cattle on the family ranch when he noticed a newborn calf was all alone. He watched to see which one of the cows was going to claim the little one. When the calf approached one of the cows and tried to nurse, the cow butted the little calf high in the air. Scott knew at that time no one was going to claim her, yes a little heifer. So he called me and said we have to bring this little girl home. As soon as I saw her, I said we are going to call her Hope. We got her home and tried to give her a bottle but she didn't know how to suck, so after working with her a couple of days, she finally caught on.
We thought everything was going well when we noticed she started limping and her back leg and hip were swollen. We took her to the Vet, and she said she had an infection which she believed was caused by ant bites. The Vet said if this spreads to her other legs she will have to be put down. She did not want to walk and she would not eat grain. She was immediately put on antibiotics and had to have an injection every day for 21 days.
After we had given Hope all of her injections, it took six weeks before she fully recovered, but we still could not get her to eat grain. I was very concerned that she was lonely and needed a friend. So, early one Saturday morning when Scott was at the family ranch, I headed to Lampasas to get a Boer Kid. I found a paint doeling, 3 months old, and named her Bella. When I got her home and put her with Hope, they bonded immediately. Hope began to change; when she saw Bella eat grain she started eating too, so I knew this was a good thing for Hope.
They are still best friends today.
We fell in love with Bella, and she became such a wonderful pet. We decided then we have to raise Boer Goats. We now have a small ranch in Bartlett, TX which is located 20 miles east of Jarrell, TX from IH 35. Our goats are bred naturally and consist of South African Fullbloods and American Purebreds - we are focusing on Reds, Paints, Blacks and Traditionals. Our bloodlines are Renoir, Codi/PCI, EGGSstreme, Liginite, Sasquastch, Downen Big, Vorster, and Red Man.
